He sees the other prairie chickens rising a few feet above the earth, then loudly cawing and scratching at the soil. He does this, too, for his whole life. Near the end of that life, he sees an eagle proudly flying overhead. He asks in astonishment “What is that?” An elderly prairie chicken tell him, “that is an eagle. Why he can fly right up to the sun. But don’t you ever try that. You are just a prairie chicken like the rest of us.” And so he dies, thinking he is a prairie chicken, having spent his entire life rising only a few feet above the earth. If only he had known he was an eagle, why he might have flown right up to the sun! This is what Cynthia Brian brings to the airwaves.
