1-29-34 Starting a Small Business
Keerthi and Ruhani host a program on how to grow a small business. Milan suggests that youth can start a small business by using YouTube, Ebay, and other social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. Even a garage sale or a lemonade stand is a business. In a discussion, Ruhani and Keerthi both agree that they enjoy the “coziness” and “personalization” of small businesses because small businesses get to know their customers wishes and desires more than a large company. To start a small business, you have to be organized, keep accurate accounts, and be passionate. Ruhani talks about the power of social media, especially Tik Tok, to grow your business. She would like to start a small bookstore/café in her neighborhood with weekly author events. Keerthi would like to start a music store that sells only sheet music that can be scanned to listen to the sound before buying. Kevin joins the conversation with information on CHATGPT and information on how AI could help individuals start a company or new business, especially through data entry and automation. Kevin would like to start a thrift store!

1-22-23 Women's Empowerment
“I never dreamed about success. I worked for it.” Estee Lauder
Advocacy: any action that speaks in favor of, recommends, argues for a cause, supports or defends, or pleads on behalf of others. It’s encouraging when a man starts the conversation advocating for the rights and freedoms of women. Hosts Rose and Hannah, both female empowerment activists, interview Nihal who firmly believes that women should have equal rights to men in all areas of private and public life, including education, employment, and political participation. He donates money to a family in India to send a girl to school. Hannah puts women’s advocacy into context and offers methods to speak up and support women. She launched her own charitable organization, Hannah’s Project, which is dedicated to the empowerment, education, and equality of women through education and literacy. Rose was inspired by many courageous women including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Tarana Burke, and Masha Amini and offers a background on the movements formed around their advocacy.. Sharanya joins the conversation with a tribute to literary pioneers in feminism, Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath. She also sheds light on the horrific lobotomies that were performed on “hysterical” women, such as Rosemary Kennedy. Women and men are equals. It is the responsibility of every person in every nation to eradicate the patriarchy and embrace equality for all.
“There’s something so special about a woman who dominates in a man’s world. It takes a certain grace, strength, intelligence, fearlessness, and the nerve to never take no for an answer.” ― Rihanna

1-15-23 Classic Literature with Keerthi
Keerthi, our Nerd Extraordinaire, hosts and entertains this entire program focused on classic literature, favorite books, and debate. British Keerthi starts off the show with her regular humor and wacky ideas. She discusses George Orwell’s, Animal Farm, the story of the Russian Revolution, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey., and her favorite book of all-time, Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. In segment two, Keerthi analyzes, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, The Lion, the witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, and again her all-time favorite, Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. For the final segment, Keerthi launches into the benefits of creative writing in debate. Debates are often designed to test skills of critical thinking, analysis, and persuasive communication. It would be expected from debaters to be precise, accurate and factual in their arguments, instead of being only creative. That is why, striking a balance between being creative and being precise is important for any debater. Tune in for more Nerd Extraordinaire logic.

1-8-23 The importance of Family
“Family is not an important thing. It's everything.” – Michael J. Fox.
Three family members, Nihal, Kirpa, and Milan come together to discuss the connection that family has with one another. Nihal hosts the program encouraging his sister and his cousin to share tidbits of fun and funny times. Milan lives in Chicago while Kirpa and Nihal are in California. They discuss their holidays, games, and movies they’ve enjoyed and the importance of supporting one another. We are also reminded that family can be friends and animals that are important to us. Cherish your loved ones as family.
You could gather a million treasures
You could search from coast to coast
The most valuable thing you’ll find tis that family matters the most.

1-1-23 NFTS and New Year!
As we begin a New Year, host British Keerthi provides a breakdown on the different types of debate styles. She then turns into American Keerthi to interview Ally and Emma Chen about NFTS. Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, prove to be a more eccentric innovation than controversial Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Famous for its multimillion dollar sales in 2021, NFTs arose as the world shifted to virtual life, work, and school. Although simply a jpeg of digital art with so-called “copyrights” for the artist, the technology behind these codes with digital graphics have far more benefit for aspiring artists. Relying on the technology of cryptocurrency, NFTs provide ownership rights features allowing artists to make passive income off of their works. However, skeptics debate whether NFTs are simply an overrated fad or a prosperous invention for future generations. Before you form an opinion, tune in to learn about the technology behind NFTs and its future with teen artists.
Keerthi talks about NFTS the benefit Be the Star You Are!® through the StarStyle® Community. By purchasing a NFT from www.StarStyleCommunity.com, you will be donating to Be the Star You Are!®. Each NFT is based on a character from Cynthia Brian’s new children's book, No Barnyard Bullies, illustrated by Jensen Russell. These NFTs are like baseball trading cards of yore! Bio: Ally and Emma Chen
As rising high school students in the 2020 quarantine, Ally and Emma Chen designed an initiative to benefit youth in healthcare environments through their childhood interest: art. Their initiative sprouted into a nonprofit organization named Youth Creativity Project that is focused on donating art resources to local hospitals. Through YCP, they expanded their artistic passion into other fields of interests, such as volunteering. While trying to develop new fundraising options, they came across a peculiar new technology coined “Non-fungible Tokens.” This new innovation sparked their interest, and they began to explore the cross sections between arts and economics through NFTs. They hope to one day apply the knowledge and potential of NFTs to our nonprofit as a fundraising option. Website: YouthCreativityProject.Org

Intellectual Disabilities and Women's HEalth Empowerment
Host Keerthi launches the program with a description of intellectual disabilities. “According to the American Psychiatric Association, intellectual disabilities affect intellectual and adaptive functioning, which means that individuals with intellectual disabilities generally struggle with critical thinking and learning (the intellectual part) and living daily life as an independent human being (the adaptive part). Approximately 1% of the population is affected.” Down Syndrome is one of many genetic syndromes that cause intellectual disabilities. She interviews author Melissa Hart with her newest novel, Daisy Woodworm Changes the World, about a 13-year-old track star, Daisy, who decides to help her brother, Sorrel--who has Down syndrome and adores Special Olympics and men’s fashion--fulfill his dream of becoming a YouTube influencer. 11-20-22 Thanksgiving Gratitude
No matter what the situation is...close your eyes and think of all the things in your life you could be grateful for right now." — Deepak Chopra
Is there any holiday better than Thanksgiving? Not only is it a time to eat all our favorite foods, but it is also a time to express our gratitude for living. Keerthi hosts this holiday favorite and surprisingly she is not a fan of Thanksgiving food because she is a vegetarian. But she is a believer in appreciation and thankfulness and offers several quotes to ignite our gratefulness. She interviews Kirpa and Nihal Gill who testify that Thanksgiving is their favorite holiday. They share their family traditions and meal preparations. Spending time with their extended family is the highlight. Kirpa provides some historical context to the holiday while Nihal encourages others to volunteer to help others less fortunate during the holiday season. Alix, our resident restaurant reviewer and foodie talks about the favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal…dessert and offers three places to buy the best pies and cakes. Alix makes our mouth water with her divine descriptions of the buttery crusts and creamy fillings. Keerthi is humorous, as always, with her wacky comments and fun improvisational tone.
Remember to perceive the privilege you have this Thanksgiving, because someone out there will always have less than you! Be grateful!
From all of us at Express Yourself!™ Teen Radio, we wish you a very happy, healthy, and hearty Thanksgiving. We are GRATEFUL for you!

11-13-22 Farming and Food
"My grandfather used to say that once in your life you need a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, and a preacher. But every day, three times a day, you need a farmer." - Brenda Schoepp
As humans we need to eat. What we eat can sustain us and provide ultimate enjoyment. Keerthi and Rose host this delicious program showcasing produce, farming, and food. Two foodie friends, Rose and Alix describe their tasting menu experience at Eleven Madison Park, a three Michelin star restaurant in Manhattan, that transformed its concept to a totally plant-based menu in 2021. They describe each item of the fifteen-course meal and the fascinating tour of the kitchen. The second guest is Cynthia Brian who grew up on a farm and still grows most of her own food. She talks about her newest book, No Barnyard Bullies, that chronicles true stories of her menagerie of adopted critters on her farm. (Available at www.CynthiaBrian.com) Cynthia responds to Keerthi’s questions about growing mushrooms and Rose’s questions about what vegetables can be planted now and what fruits are ripe. Our A.I. Reporter, Kevin Choo joins the team to offer his information on how A.I. both directly and indirectly benefits farmers. Modern drones and sensors can efficiently and quickly gather data about all the different factors that go into crop yield, ranging from simple things like the weather to more complicated and in-depth things like nutrient distribution in the soil, how much fertilizer has been given, and the moisture in the air and soil to give a probably precise measurement of how much you’ll get out of one harvest. If you love to eat, consider growing some of your food. It’s easy, healthy, and fun!

11-6-22 Misogyny Online and Debate
“We are volcanoes. When we women offer our experience as truth, as human truth, all the maps change. There are new mountains.” — Ursula K. LeGuin
The increase in technology and social media, has led to the rise of misogyny online - a dangerous, vile problem that has infiltrated almost every corner of the internet. Hannah and Keerthi host this program about equality for women. Hannah discusses a major problem that has infiltrated almost every corner of the internet…misogyny. She discusses the link between discrimination, violent extremism, and social inequity that arises as a result of misogyny, threats, and targeted violence online towards women from men. This program takes an in depth look at the hatred and resentment of women from many supremist-thinking males from all parts of the world who believe in rape culture and violence towards women. Keerthi lightens up the conversation as usual with humor and then segues into females in debate. Although subtle, female debaters are judged because of their gender. Debate, and speech in general, is male-dominated with male domination in politics. Restrictions on hate speech and violent content must be regulated. Speak up. Support women and women’s rights, and fight against misogyny. We are all human beings and deserve to be treated equally.

Halloween and Great L.A. Restaurants
It’s that time of year where children everywhere dress up in costumes and go door-to-door trick or treating in search of candy. Host Sharanya talks about her Halloween plans and shares one of her original poems. She then offers listeners a real treat when she introduces our newest reporter, Alix Erlij, who is a true teen foodie. 9-25-22 Corporate Exploitation and Gentrification
Why are the policies and ethics of business so important? What exactly goes into the products we are buying? Hannah Sahota, the 17-year-old founder of the charitable organization Hannah’s Project, passionate tutor and activist, and today’s host of Express Yourself! Teen Radio tackles the topic of corporate policy, promises, and their effects on our society. Unethical business practices have recently skyrocketed in the makeup, wig, and clothing industry, perpetuating child and slave labor worldwide. The lack of transparency makes it hard for ethical consumption in chain corporations, and this sentiment is similar for many recent climate claims. Hannah shows how many popular corporations may not be so “eco-friendly” or ethical as they appear. With recent data and studies, Hannah illustrates which companies are fulfilling their ambitious promises displayed to the public, and those who are just greenwashing: She also discusses gentrification, an ever-increasing economic issue contributing to classism and large corporations. Residents and small businesses are being forced out due to higher rent, coercion and bribery, and evictions in favor of their more affluent counterparts. We, as customers, deserve to know what we are buying, where it comes from, and how it affects us! It is our responsibility to fight against unethical business practices and claims as the consumer, so awareness is key! Advocate for more corporate transparency and public awareness, as it is becoming an ever-increasing necessity with recent events.

9-18-22 A World of Drought-the Importance of Water
Why is water so important? About 71 percent of the Earth's surface is water-covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5 percent of all Earth's water. Water also exists in the air as water vapor, in rivers and lakes, in icecaps and glaciers, in the ground as soil moisture and in aquifers, and in humans and animals. Hosts Rose and Hannah talk with reporters Sharanya, Kirpa, and Nihal about the meaning of H2O. Sharanya reads an original poem, Kirpa discusses public health, Nihal reports on droughts and how to minimize water usage, while Rose and Hannah have a conversation about the extreme effects of climate change and global warming. No one can deny that our planet is warming and our glaciers, rivers, and lakes are diminishing. We must ALL do our part to save our world and all humanity. Without water, everything on Earth perishes.

9-11-22 Terrorist Attacks, The Horror of 9/11, and Finding Peace
Sharanya sits in the host chair to discuss the shock and sadness of terrorist attacks, especially that of 9/11/01. She wasn’t even born when it happened, but the aftereffects of that horrific day linger in the hearts and minds of Americans. The aftermath affected not only the survivors and the families of the fallen, but ordinary, law-abiding citizens whose skin color, religion, heritage, and customs were similar to that of the perpetrators. Immigrants became targets of hate crimes. Islamophobia, verbal and physical harassment, and detention became rampant as panic permeated. Peace is a five letter word with the ability to embrace individuals and their differences to create a safe atmosphere with no hostility. Peace is a choice that the world must choose.
Sharanya, who is the teen chairperson for the Be the Star You Are!® booth at the September 24 Pear and Wine Festival in Moraga shares her admiration for the event, her love of pear pies, and encourages everyone in the San Francisco Bay Area to come celebrate this joyous occasion in a beautiful venue. Cynthia Brian will be selling and autographing her new children’s book, No Barnyard Bullies, with proceeds benefiting BTSYA. Express Yourself!™ teen radio reporters and hosts will be in attendance for a meet and greet. It is going to be SO MUCH FUN with games, food, music, activities, art, wine, and inflatables for kids. 9-4-22
Biotechnology/Genetic Modification and Ethics
Another scientific episode from our very intellectual teens at Express Yourself! In segment one, Keerthi humorously describes biotechnology. She looks at the advantages of biotech. Biotech can help produce healthier foods, since genetics can be altered through biotech, scientists can increase the amount of healthy nutrients in crops. Changing the genetic code of crops could also cause fewer pesticides to be used, more efficient farming, and higher output levels. Scientists could use biotech to modify the genetic code of humans by fixing genetic deficiencies and diseases. In segment two, host Ruhani tackles women in Stem and shares books she rates about women in biotech and science. In 1970, women only made up 7% of all STEM spaces, despite making up 38 percent of all US workers. In 2019, women comprised 48 percent of all US workers — and in 2022 they make up 27 percent of STEM spaces. Biotechnology is divided into five branches— human, environmental, industrial, animal and plant. These five branches help us fight hunger and disease, produce more safely, cleanly, and efficiently, reduce our ecological footprint and save energy. Women have played and currently play an important role in each but still do not hold enough CEO positions. In segment three, our A.I. expert, Kevin, shares A.I. and Us,” which talks about how A.I. can and does affect our lives. He discusses how A.I. plays a role in biotechnology and genetic modification.
Biotechnology, while it sounds quite complex, is probably one of the earliest sciences used by man as it involves not just fancy machinery lasering tiny cells but also the general domestication of plants and animals. There are a multitude of ways that A.I. assists farmers, some of them predicting the crop yield of the harvest several weeks in advance and gauging the general market price of said crops. Of course, there is so much more, so tune in for the full report.

8-28-22 Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology refers to the branch of science and engineering devoted to designing, producing, and using structures, devices, and systems by manipulating atoms and molecules at the size of 100 nanometres (which is 100 millionth of a millimeter) or less. A very high-functioning microscope is necessary for viewing! Ruhani, Hannah, and Keerthi bring their knowledge and enthusiasm to the study of nanotechnology. Ruhani discusses its use for the treatment of cancer, Hanna shares her research of how nanotechnology can provide safer and more efficient applications for treating other human diseases and illness, and Keerthi takes a different direction talking about nanotechnology blurring the lines between reality and fantasy in science fiction.
Nanotechnology is here. It’s the now and the future of our world.

8-21-22 Women's Empowerment and Gender Equality
“Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.”
― Maya Angelou
Hannah, Ruhani, Keerthi, and Sharanya stand up for all women. Keerthi offers an insightful, yet humorous take on creating interesting characters for fiction writing, especially for the female gender. Hannah dives into the dangerous effects of the recent overturning of Roe. v. Wade which took away women’s reproductive rights and jeopardizes female healthcare. Ruhani talks about the troubling truth - women only make up .5 percent of recorded history! That’s not entirely surprising, considering history is written by the victors, and in this patriarchal society, men have been victors since the beginning of time. Her original poem focuses on this disparity. Sharanya provides a literary history lesson about women pioneers in literature and how they changed the writing world. Since Mesopotamia,, male scholars dominated the arena. Sharanya reads her original poem, “Unnoticed”.
More than ever, it is NECESSARY for young people to make their voices heard against oppression and discrimination of women and girls. Here are ways you can join the fight for women’s reproductive rights and empowerment:
• Sign petitions against discriminatory and restrictive policies targeted towards women’s health (especially now, since the Supreme Court members have repeatedly stated their conservative and religious bias against other forms of healthcare such as contraceptives).
• Join abortion rallies and protests, or even start your own with permission.
• Spread the word to your friends and family! Discussing these issues with close individuals and your peers can have a significant positive impact on the movement.
• VOTE. VOTE. VOTE! Vote like your life and rights depend on it. They do. Support candidates who unequivocally support women and abortion rights!
• Donate to organizations and abortion funds, such as Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, Center for Reproductive Rights, National Women’s Health Network, and more!
Stand up for Women! Get educated. Together the youth of America can take back the power of equality for all.

8-14-22 The Culture of Food
“Food is everything we are. It's an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. Its inseparable from those from the get-go” – Anthony Bourdain
Everyone loves to eat. But what is the cultural aspect of the foods we consume? Food culture is the practices, attitudes, and beliefs as well as the networks and institutions surrounding the production, distribution, and consumption of food. In this lively discussion about something every human on earth indulges in, host Rose invites Sharanya, guest Alix, and Nihal to the table. In her segment, The Scribble, Sharanya meshes two of her favorite things, writing and food, to create a cinquain poem about hot dogs. In the second segment, Rose and her long-time food sister, Alix, engage in a worldwide tour of great restaurants, the culture behind the food, and the importance of sitting down with family and friends to dish it up over delicious cuisine. Nihal shows us how the world is connected through the love of cooking and expressing culture through food, usually throughout generations. Are you hungry yet? Remember, you are what you eat. Bon Appetit!
