6-8-25 From First Job to Career and Big Data
In segment two, host Saanvi is honored to interview Steven Zhou, PhD, with his book, From First Job to Career, which blends real-life first-job stories with expert insights from vocational psychology. This engaging guide helps readers navigate the complex, non-linear world of modern work, offering inspiration, research, and practical tools to build a meaningful career path. Steven was the first radio host of Express Yourself!™and helped shape the early vision of the program in 2011 and even wrote and played the guitar for the iconic theme music you hear at the beginning of every show! Fast forward to today, and Steven has taken that same spirit of creativity, leadership, and impact into everything he does. (Read his bio) Steven recommends visiting MyNEXTMOVE.org to discover where your skills and interests may be for a career. But before interviewing Steven, Saanvi dives into big data, data analytics, and space in segment one. Big data is a huge amount of information. Think satellite images, temperature readings, rocket sensor logs, or even social media trends. Data analytics is the magic process of finding patterns, insights, and answers in all that information, so we can make smarter decisions. Every day, satellites orbiting Earth collect terabytes of data, monitoring climate patterns, tracking urban development, and even predicting natural disasters. This cosmic influx isn't just for astronauts or astrophysicists; it's a goldmine for data analysts, researchers, and curious minds ready to make an impact right here on Earth.
Whether you're gazing at the stars or crunching numbers on Earth, remember that the skills you develop today can propel you into exciting, uncharted territories. Embrace the data, explore the unknown, and let your curiosity guide your career journey. Data isn’t just numbers—it’s a story waiting to be told.
Bio: Steven Zhou completed his PhD in organizational psychology at George Mason University and is an incoming Assistant Professor of Psychology at Claremont McKenna College. His primary areas of research include leadership, psychometrics, and quantitative methods (including the application of LLMs and machine learning algorithms), careers and calling, and science communication. During his time at Mason, he published over 20 peer-reviewed articles, brought in almost $40k in external research funding, and taught almost a dozen course sections at both undergraduate and graduate levels in both psychology and business. Steven also has several years of full-time corporate experience in HR, data analytics, and leadership development. His book is From First Job to Career. www.stevenzhou.us

5-25-25 The Turth about Teen Driving
Host Julia is on the road to talk about something that’s both super exciting and slightly terrifying: teen driving. She talks about peer pressure and the importance of having rules for safety. Julia also advocates for being fully awake when behind the wheel as teens are perpetually sleep deprived. Follow Julia’s advice, and you can keep your car insurance rates lower while you, your family, and friends enjoy a safe ride. Driving is a privilege, not a right—earn it!

5-18-25 ThePositives and Negatives of Social Media
“Don’t use social media to impress people; use it to impact people.”- Dave Willis
There has always been a large debate on if social media is positive or negative because there are so many opinions about this topic. On one hand, your friends might be telling you to download these apps and post some pictures, and on the other hand your parents might be telling you to measure your time spent on social media. Like everything in life, there are more sides to the story! Host Diya examines the pros and cons of social media. One thing is certain, research conducted by Microsoft stated that most teenagers have an attention span of 9 seconds, which is less than a goldfish! A new term called “ brainrot” is basically the deterioration of someone’s mental health due to the excessive amount of scrolling on social media. Don't let that be you!

5-4-25 How Leadership in Youth Impacts Your Future Professional Life
• “The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.”— Nelson Mandela
Youth leader and radio host, Keerthi, discusses her leadership jobs from kindergarten to high school. What she’s learned is that leadership teaches time management. She’s learned to be calm under pressure, how to communicate effectively, how to delegate, and of course, to fake it until you make it. Youth leadership shapes your future. It makes you bold. It makes you curious. It teaches you that even when things go completely off-script, you’re capable of stepping up, laughing it off, and finding a solution. Keerthi encourages every young leader—whether you’re the president of five clubs, the captain of your team, or the unofficial motivational speaker in your friend group. In segment two, she gives listeners the six “Stages of Youth Leadership Creation™”. Youth leadership isn’t about being perfect—it's about being brave enough to try. And remember: if all else fails, just add “Youth Empowerment” to the name and you’re golden. Lead and succeed!

4-26-25 Movies and Media for Teens and Tweens
Effervescent teen host, Julia Howe, orchestrates a lively radio broadcast focused on movies and interviews two radio reporters from KIDS FIRST. Julia says that teen movies shape the way teens think about growing up, relationships, and offer a sense of identity. The movies she highlights have been a mirror to high school lives and, at times, an escape from them. From Ferris Bueller, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Clueless to Mean Girls, Lady Bird, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, High School Musical 2, and more, today’s teen films are breaking new ground. Julia then interviews Ashleigh and Kinsley, two KIDS FIRST film critics. They talk about how their backgrounds in debate and acting have helped them be KIDS FIRST reporters. They also offer their opinions on what they’d like to see changed or modified in the entertainment industry. KIDS FIRST empowers youth to navigate today's media through film-based learning, developing critical thinking, communication, and cultural understanding. Ashleigh and Kinsley discuss how they have grown from their involvement with KIDS FIRST.

4-20-25 Earth Gratitude and Healing the Planet
Hosts Saanvi Phaneendra and Keerthi Eranivan weigh in on how teens can save the planet while being grateful for our glorious planet earth. Saanvi starts off the discussion with her Space Spotlight segment. While today’s conversation is rooted in healing our planet, we can’t ignore the skies above us-because what happens in space impacts Earth more than we realize. She shares that over 100 million pieces of debris orbit our planet-ranging from inactive satellites to tiny fragments from past collisions, all traveling at speeds over 17,000 miles per hour. This growing cloud of space junk poses serious risks to Earth-monitoring satellites, which are critical for tracking climate change, wildfires, sea level rise, and weather patterns.
Keerthi and Saanvi then interview Natalie Pace who founded the Earth Gratitude Project which features sustainability tips from the most respected experts and visionaries on the planet, including H.M. King Charles III (when he was H.R.H. The Prince of Wales), H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, Sia, Elon Musk, H.M. Queen Diambi, Deepak Chopra and more. She also talks about teens and financial freedom. College students can use Natalie Pace’s information to get a better degree for half the cost. Natalie Pace's easy as a pie chart nest egg strategies earned gains in the last two recessions and have outperformed the bull markets in between. That is why she is enthusiastically recommended by Nobel Prize winning economist Gary S. Becker and Main Street families. Natalie recommends that students take a gap year between graduating from high school and going to college.
In the final segment, Keerthi shows how teens are the final defense to healing and saving the planet. She advises teens to:
1.Embrace Your Inner Eco-Warrior
2. Use Your Voice. And Maybe Your Megaphone.
3. Get a Squad: Saving the planet is way more fun with friends.
4.Make Sustainable Trendy
5. Think Bigger: Earth is our only home!
The choices we make now—what we eat, buy, share, and say—will shape the future we all live in.
Every choice we make ripples across its forests, oceans, skies… and even space.
May the forest be with you! Tune in and heal our planet!

3-23-25 The Importance of Teen Volunteerism
• “Volunteering is at the very core of being a human. No one has made it through life without someone else’s help.” – Heather French Henry
Not all volunteer experiences are created equal. Julia hosts a program about teen volunteerism. Reporter, Armine, joins the conversation in segment two. Julia discusses mandatory volunteerism, whereby many schools require many hours of community service to graduate. Julia says, “On one hand, it pushes students out of their comfort zones, gives them valuable skills, and might even spark a lifelong passion for helping others. On the other hand, forcing someone to be "selfless" kind of defeats the purpose, and if done wrong, it could turn students off from community service entirely. What’s the solution? Both Julia and Armine agree that a middle ground is the way to go. Instead of requiring a set number of hours, schools could strongly encourage volunteering while offering meaningful, engaging opportunities. Instead of a graduation requirement, tie volunteerism to extra credit or special recognition. Armine states that being a volunteer helps a teen be proactive, compassionate, and willing to invest in the community. There are tangible benefits of volunteering, and it also shapes character. Volunteering fosters empathy, responsibility, and the ability to connect with others. These qualities are important for healthy, happy living. Being a teen volunteer inspires confidence and leadership while helping teens communicate about complex environmental issues.
As Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

3-15-25 The Importance of Developing Life Skills
“Skill is the unified force of experience, intellect and passion in their operation.” - John Ruskin
What is a life skill and how do you develop one? Host Diya with reporters Kirpa and Milan tackle these critical questions for teens. A life skill will help you throughout life whether it is something very important, or something simple. It can be learning how to cook, manage money, or how to be a good friend. Critical thinking and emotional intelligence are essential for problem-solving and decision-making as well as understanding and empathizing with others. To build healthy relationships we need to navigate social situations. Time management involves planning or utilizing your time wisely. Following daily routines on time, completing your tasks or assignments, and prioritizing important items can build your self-confidence. Life skills are crucial for both personal and professional success because they equip individuals with the practical abilities to navigate challenges, build relationships, and achieve goals, ultimately leading to greater fulfillment and career advancement.

3-8-25 Self-Care and Healthy Relationships
• Self-care is the art of nurturing your mind, body, and soul to achieve inner harmony. Host Diya talks about one of the most important actions that play into everyday life: the practice of self-care and building healthy relationships. Some ways to create healthy relationships include having open communication, respect, and most importantly trust. Having meaningful communication opens our minds so that we understand the world from different perspectives. It is also important to set healthy boundaries to help improve self- care capabilities and protect mental health. Reporter Kirpa posits that self-care allows a person to maintain stress healthily, boost mood, increase energy levels, and allow for a happier, fuller life. To rebuild relationships or rekindle trust, it is critical to take responsibility for actions, practice forgiveness, prioritize open, honest communication, and exhibit patience. Nurture your body, mind, and spirit by caring for yourself.

3-1-2025 Is A. I. Friend or Foe?
• "AI is not a threat, but a tool—one that amplifies human ingenuity and expands the boundaries of what’s possible." — Satya Nadella
• Host Saanvi Phaneendra tackles one of the most debated and mind-blowing topics in the world of technology; Artificial Intelligence. Reporter Milan provides the benefits of A.I. and also the negatives. Deep fakes are a problem and hacking is increased with artificial intelligence. He discusses how students use A. I. and how he uses it. Saanvi then takes us to outer space with her segment, Space Spotlight. When we think of space exploration, we often picture astronauts, rovers, and giant telescopes. But guess what? A.I. is the secret powerhouse behind some of the most incredible space discoveries of our time. Saanvi talks about the fascinating ways A.I. is pushing the boundaries of our knowledge about the universe. A.I. is helping us find new worlds. Will A.I. helps us detect alien civilizations?
Do you think A.I. is helping or hurting? Keep asking big questions, keep exploring, and as always, keep looking up. Remember, A.I. is the engine, but humans are the drivers.

2-23-2025 Do Teens Have Choice and Agency
“You have within you right now, everything you need to deal with whatever the world can throw at you."— Brian Tracy
Host Julia Howe starts by discussing teen health and doctor appointments. She offers these tips:
• Prioritize mental health by finding a support system and knowing when to ask for help.
• Build habits that future-you will be grateful for, like staying active, eating well, and actually sleeping at a reasonable hour.
• Be aware of relationships—whether that means friendships, dating, or just surrounding yourself with people who lift you up instead of dragging you down.
She advocates for asking questions. Be involved. The choices we make today shape who we become tomorrow. If we want to be strong, healthy, and ready for whatever life throws at us, we have to start taking charge—now. Your health. Your body. Your future. Own it.
In segment two, Julia tackles dress codes. Schools argue that dress codes exist for three main reasons:
1. To prevent distractions.
2. To promote professionalism.
3. To ensure safety.
Julia breaks down the rules and offers better suggestions. Dress codes should be about making sure students feel comfortable and respected, not about controlling what they wear. Schools should be places of learning, not places where students—especially girls, students of color, and religious minorities—are constantly policed over their appearance.
Julia’s final message: “Your voice, your power, your future!”

2-8-25 Plans for 2025

1-31-25 Discoveries of the Unknown
• "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes." – Marcel Proust
Imagine this: a powerful ancient civilization, built on advanced technology and opulence, suddenly disappearing beneath the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, leaving behind only mysterious legends and unanswered questions. Hosts Saanvi Phaneendra and Julia Howard dive deeply into the histories and mysteries that have fascinated experts, scientists, and explorers for centuries. From watery Atlantis to the icy moons of Saturn and Jupiter, from bioluminescent sharks to Göbekli Tepe, the massive ancient structure in Turkey dating back to 9600 BCE; thousands of years before the pyramids, Julia and Saanvi show us how every discovery pushes the boundaries of what we think we know. Tune in to unearth the unknown.

1-26-25 Sustainability in the Universe
Sustainability in the Universe
"The Earth is the cradle of humanity, but mankind cannot stay in the cradle forever."
• Host and reporter of Space Spotlight, Saanvi Phaneendra, embarks on a journey beyond our planet to explore sustainability in the universe. Whether it’s surviving on Mars, creating self-sufficient space stations, or even living on an exoplanet, sustainability is a critical element. Space missions teach us valuable lessons that we can apply here on Earth, promoting a circular economy, reducing waste, and pushing us to develop smarter technologies for resource management. Future Mars habitats will need to be designed with sustainability at their core. This means using local materials to build structures, growing food in hydroponic and aeroponic farms, and harnessing solar energy to power life-support systems. Whether it’s recycling water on the ISS, farming in space, or mining asteroids, one thing is clear—sustainability is key to our future among the stars.
Remember, the lessons we learn from space exploration can help us build a more sustainable future right here on Earth.

1-20-25 The History of the US Presidential Inaugurations
“Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” – JFK
Host Keerthi travels back to the inauguration of George Washington to give a humorous, yet informative history of Presidential inaugurations in the United States. She even talks about the fashions, frills, and forgettable faux pax, including the lessons from the 2021 storming of the Capitol with the not-so-peaceful transfer of power. The most important thing we all need to remember about the presidential inauguration: whether it’s 1789 or 2025, whether it’s George Washington or Donald Trump, the inauguration is a reminder that in this country, democracy is the star of the show. It’s a moment of transition, a symbol of unity. Let’s hope January 20, 2025 is a great day for America.

12-22-24 Grammy Winning Holiday Hootenanny
"The best way to spread cheer is singing loud for all to hear."
— Elf (attributed to Buddy the Elf, written by David Berenbaum)
Express Yourself! teen radio host, Julia Howe, is part of a Grammy-winning choral group who have recently been nominated for "Best American Roots Song" and "Best American Folk Album" for the 67th Grammy Awards as we were featured on folk artist Aoife O' Donovan's recent album All My Friends. Julia begins the program by talking about the history of Christmas caroling. The word “carol” comes from the Old French word carole, (cahull), which meant a circle dance with singing. She provides the background of caroling from the early days of Christianity until modern times. She then introduces the choral groups that provide the beautiful holiday music you’ll hear.
The Waves
The Waves is a Bay Area youth-led acappella group that blends traditional and modern songs, pushing the boundaries of choir music with creative experimentation. The group aims to bring youth perspectives to traditional choral performance.
The San Francisco Girls Chorus
San Francisco Girls Chorus prepares girls and young women from diverse backgrounds for success, on stage and in life, through rigorous, empowering music education, and enriches Bay Area cultural life through innovative vocal performance.

Lick-Wilmerding Vocal Ensemble
The Lick-Wilmerding Vocal Ensemble offers training to high school students with no prior experience, transforming them into confident performers. With a focus on vocal technique and musical expression, the ensemble builds a community of young singers who are passionate about music and performance.
The next time you hear a carol, think about the history of caroling, connecting to centuries of celebrations, resilience, and pure holiday magic.
Happy Holiday Hootenanny from Express Yourself!™ Teen Radio, StarStyle® Productions, LLC, and Be the Star You Are!® 501 c3 charity.

12-8-24 Teen Stress During the Holidays
“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” –Hamilton Wright Mabie
Ah, the holidays. For some, it's the most magical time of the year—twinkling lights, cozy nights, and the smell of cookies baking in the oven. But if you’re a teenager? Let’s be real—the holidays can be a bit...complicated. Join host, Julia and guest Steffi as they discuss the joy and angst teens face during the holiday season. Steffi shares the psychology of the season.
When you're a kid, the holidays are all about magic. Cookies just appear, gifts magically arrive, and the world feels wrapped up in a sparkly bow. But as a teen, the curtain gets pulled back. Suddenly, you’re in charge of buying gifts (on what budget, exactly?), maybe working a holiday shift, and trying to squeeze in studying for exams. For teens, the takeaway is this: The holidays don’t have to be magical in the way you thought as a kid. It’s okay to feel a little stressed or even underwhelmed. But carving out small, meaningful moments—laughing with a friend, bingeing holiday movies, or just taking a deep breath—can make all the difference.
Bio: Steffi Kim
Steffi Kim is a high school junior who has a passion for psychology, particularly how psychology can be applied to improve everyday life. She runs a blog called Psychology for Society that explores topics like altruism, self-esteem, and group dynamics. Steffi also writes psychology-related articles for the Young Scientist Journal and has published peer-reviewed research pieces. Additionally, she has conducted independent research in the field under the mentorship of a PhD candidate and a professor, and hopes to pursue a career in academia. In her free time, Steffi enjoys playing club soccer, reading novels, and creative writing. Steffi hopes to use these skills to communicate her passion for psychology with the ultimate goal of helping improve the behaviors and attitudes of society.

12-1-24 Are Teens Happy with the Outcome of the 2024 Elections?
“The poll that matters is the one that happens on election day.” – Heather Wilson
Teen radio host Keerthi discusses the results of the 2024 election and reports on how teens are reacting to the results. She first provides a humorous rendition of the history of America’s election system and the grand experiment of democracy. For all its flaws, America’s election system is a beautiful, chaotic mess. It’s powered by millions of people who care enough to show up—sometimes in person, by mail, and sometimes just to yell about it on Facebook. Keerthi then focuses on the unprecedented events of this election: Joe Biden dropping out of the race, the first Black/South Asian woman, Kamala Harris stepping up, a convicted felon in Trump running for the third time, and the meme-able moments from all the debates. Donald Trump and Kamala Harris represented two vastly different political ideologies, which explain their respective support bases and policy priorities. Keerthi identifies the varied values of each candidate. Many teens believe that America is doomed. However one feels about the election results, the best way to create a better country is to communicate, listen, and share our goals, thoughts, and dreams.

11-24-24 Thankfulness, Thanksgiving, Gratitude
“Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind.” – Lionel Hampton
Julia hosts a special Thanksgiving program focused on gratitude and thankfulness. Julia tells the true history of the first Thanksgiving, which is a bit different from what we were taught. This is a “Truth-giving”. instead of celebrating the myth, we celebrate the truth.
Thanksgiving is a day of gratitude—and Julia encourages us to reshape this holiday by choosing to learn, honor, and share truths to respect Native cultures and stories. Choose a holiday that doesn’t just celebrate harvest and family, but also honesty, empathy, and justice. Reporters Kirpa and Milan talk about the meaning of gratitude and share what they are grateful for. The power of gratitude encourages living in the present moment. Family and friends always top the gratitude list, but also include gratitude for health, democracy, and freedom. Find your way to practice gratitude, give back, and share the love! Have a happy and bountiful Thanksgiving.

11-10-24 Space Debris
“Preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known". -Carl Sagan
As humanity ventures deeper into space, a big challenge has become the effects of space debris. Saanvi Phaneendra discusses what space debris is and why it is so dangerous. What is space debris? Simply put, it's any man-made object in orbit that no longer serves a purpose. This includes everything from old satellites and discarded rocket stages to tiny fragments created by collisions and disintegrations.
How does all this junk end up in space? Every time a spacecraft is launched, bits and pieces of the rocket are left behind in orbit. As more missions take place, the number of debris steadily increases. Collisions between objects—whether they’re active satellites or fragments of debris—only add to the mess, creating even more fragments. Saanvi then interviews her sister, Siri Phaneendra, a former radio host who recently graduated from UC Berkeley in Business and Data Science. Siri was a project manager for one of UC Berkeley’s data science consulting organizations. Siri led a project with DataGood, a consulting organization that focuses on projects with a social impact. Their project aimed to analyze data from a dataset operated by the U.S. Strategic Command, to understand space debris better and find ways to reduce its risks. Tune in to find out more about working with the stars to clean up space debris and keep our planet safe..
