4-21-24 Adventures
"Not all who wander are lost." - J.R.R. Tolkein
Do you like to experience adventures or are you afraid of new trails? Host Keerthi navigates the realm of adventures. Keerthi states that we are all called to adventure in our unique ways. Sometimes it comes as a whisper, a gentle urging to explore beyond the familiar. Other times, it arrives as a thunderous roar, impossible to ignore. But regardless of its form, the call to adventure beckons us to step outside our comfort zones, to embrace the unknown with open arms. Kirpa and Milan provide the various meanings of the word “adventure” and share adventures they’ve taken together in Yellowstone. They admit what scares them and where they’d like to travel. Saanvi Phaneendra does her segment of “Space Spotlight” as she showcases the adventure of each planet in the solar system. From daring flybys to the deployment of rovers and potential future manned missions, we'll explore what humanity has achieved and what we plan to achieve in our quest to understand our neighbors in space.
Whether you skydive or dive in swimming pools, every day can be an adventure if you decide to explore.

4-7-24 Contact from the Pleiades
"In the deepest sense the search for extraterrestrial intelligence is a search for ourselves." - Carl Sagan, an American astronomer and planetary scientist
Welcome, cosmic explorers, to this week’s edition of "Space Spotlight," with host Saanvi Phaneendra! UFO sightings have been a source of fascination and mystery for decades, sparking the imaginations of enthusiasts and skeptics alike. Reports of unidentified flying objects range from mysterious lights zigzagging in the night sky to detailed encounters with spacecraft of seemingly extraterrestrial origin. These accounts come from all corners of the globe and from credible witnesses, including pilots, astronauts, and military personnel, who describe experiences that challenge our understanding of technology and physics. The persistent question remains: Are we truly alone in the universe, or is there evidence of contact with extraterrestrial intelligence?
Saanvi interviews documentary filmmaker and investigative author, Brit Elders about her two photo journal volumes of UFO…Contact from the Pleiades. This photo journal presents the unique contact case of a Swiss farmer, Billy Meier, who claims to have met with the Pleiadians hundreds of times, compiling many layers of evidence including notes on their conversations, hundreds of photographs, movie footage, audio recordings of the craft, landing tracks of the spaceships, dozens of witnesses, and even metal samples of the craft itself. UFO…Contact from the Pleiades takes the reader back to a time before home computers, digital photography and easily accessible photo enhancement programs. Yet the evidence—analyzed in laboratories around the world—could not be easily dismissed and supported the claims of the contacted, Billy Meier. The breath-taking images, profound words of the Pleiadians, and the extensive investigation that spanned seven years are as relevant today as they were forty-five years ago.
Join Saanvi and Brit on this mysterious journey through the cosmos filled with wonders that surpass our wildest imaginations, including UFOs and other galactic civilizations.

3-31-24 CRISPR
“We are at the dawn of a new era in human history. New technologies have the potential to change the life of every person on the planet in profound ways.” - Francis Collins
Would you like to birth children that look like Barbie and Ken? It may be possible in the not-too-distant future.
In today’s broadcast, host Saanvi discusses something that sounds like it's straight out of a sci-fi novel but is actually happening in labs around the world. It's called CRISPR, short for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. CRISPR is opening doors we never even knew existed. Scientists are exploring treatments for genetic disorders that were once thought untreatable. Diseases like cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, and even some forms of cancer could potentially be corrected at the genetic level, offering hope to millions. Reporter of The Breakdown, Rory, did a deep dive researching CRISPR and his knowledge and presentation provide food for deep thought. He shares how CRISPR could solve many issues that have evaded the medical profession, such as eradicating HIV. Yet CRISPR could potentially be harmful or cause problems in the future if used incorrectly. Scientists could potentially add superhuman genes to an unborn or developing child and possibly to adults too, creating super soldiers destined for war. Could new genetic mutations benefit the human race making us smarter, and stronger than we already are?
In her segment, Space Spotlight, Saanvi ventures into a realm where few have dared to dream: the intersection of CRISPR, gene editing, and space exploration. CRISPR holds the promise of making the cosmos more accessible to humanity, but it also challenges us to think deeply about our responsibilities as stewards of both our species and the environments we aspire to inhabit.

3-24-24 Mental Health and Social Media
“When your mental health becomes impacted by social media then it is time for a detox.”
— Germany Kent
Are you indulging in social media? How do you feel? Host Keerthi, who loves social media, navigates the negatives and positives of various platforms. She advocates for embracing imperfection and showcasing authenticity as well as digital detoxes. Keerthi also encourages celebrating other's successes, big or small, and showing kindness to strangers. Keerthi then interviews high school junior, Niru Shivakumar about the connection between mental health and social media. Niru is the founder of a nonprofit organization called Offline, which has been one of her main focuses for three years. She works with 5th grade classes across the Bay Area to educate students about the dangers and repercussions of social media as well as the effects it can have on mental health before they reach middle school. She does not use social media. Reporter, Kirpa, joins the conversation to discuss the pros and cons of social media and how it can affect our mental health. Her parents do not allow her to use social media and she understands that is because they care and want to keep her safe and healthy. If you use social media, remember, you are more than your follower count, more than your most liked post, and more than the sum of your social media presence. Make sure to proofread every word before you hit send and keep your mental health front and center. Be yourself and don’t strive for perfection as perfection doesn’t exist. And consider being OFFLINE!

Since 2021, she has run Offline organization, a nonprofit aimed at battling phone addiction related mental health issues in young students. She began the organization because of her own personal experiences and has spoken out at several schools across the Bay Area. She loves to play sports and read books, which she believes is the better alternative than social media these days. She wants to continue Offline in the future and expand it even more to reach students in other countries as well. Offline’s program is an interactive, age-appropriate presentation for in person visits and an informative fun video for online visits that dives into the dangers of constant social media use that also describes and provides ways to stay healthier without the Internet. Offline also has its own newsletter, where they send out issues every 2 weeks about new technological advancements and new alternatives to stay happy without social media. During in person visits, the program combines fun games with the same theme to keep students engaged and help them understand the ideas better. www. offlineorganization.com

3-17-24 Skills Versus Abilities
“Only those who have the patience to do simple things perfectly ever acquire the skill to do difficult things easily.” — James J. Corbett
Skills and abilities? They sound like synonyms…but are they. An ability is defined as the capability to do something - while a skill is the ability to do something WELL.
Host Julia discusses the differences between skills and abilities.
Abilities are something you can just do. To accomplish a skill, you need the ability to do the thing. She shares the story of Don Chang, the creator of the clothing store, Forever 21. It’s a story of faith, hope, determination, and hard work. Both skills and abilities are malleable. They're not fixed traits that we're stuck with for life. They are clay in the hands of a sculptor, YOU, waiting to be molded into something magnificent. You can mold yourself into the person you want to be. Your skills are clay, you are the artist.

She announces, “Ladies, gentlemen, and the indescribable enigma that is high school lunchroom mac 'n' cheese—I stand before you today as the humble ambassador of Teenhood, the grand connoisseur of awkward encounters, and the undisputed champion of meme-worthy moments. Yes, my fellow adolescents, we are gathered here in the grand amphitheater of teenage tribulations to celebrate the rollercoaster ride that is our collective teenage existence.” After Keerthi provides an overview of the chaos and amusements of teenage years, she interviews the President of the Georgia chapter of Teens Tutor Teens, Meryl, who expertly explains the importance of free tutoring for teens. 3-3-24 The Wisdom and Power of Girls
“A girl should be two things: who and what she wants”
― Coco Chanel
What are the pressures society puts upon teenage girls? Teen hosts Julia and Keerthi have a lively discussion about their struggles and experiences with peers, parents, and social media encounters, including posts of unrealistic body images and beauty standards. They then converse with guest author, Chelsey Goodan, with her book, Underestimated. It is obvious that Chelsey honors teen girls and really listens and cares about their challenges and concerns. Chelsea is nonjudgmental adult who teenage girls trust to share their innermost secrets and doubts — all the things they wish they could communicate to their parents and the world at large. She uniquely understands what makes teenage girls tick, and through this book, Goodan passes the mic to them. Rather than dismissing teenage girls based on fears or treating them as problems that need to be solved, Goodan encourages us as parents, and as a society, to help teenage girls unleash their power and celebrate their intrinsic wisdom, creating more healing and connection for everyone. With her vivacious personality, Chelsea conveys love and understanding while encouraging listeners to listen and engage with teens.
On today’s segment of “Space Spotlight”, reporter Saanvi celebrates the pioneering women in space history and the inspiring lessons they've imparted to generations of young dreamers, especially the teenage girls who look up at the night sky and see a canvas of endless possibilities. She starts with Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to orbit our planet. Then showcases Sally Ride's achievements and efforts in STEM education, followed by other young female space groundbreakers including Mae Jemison, Christina Koch, Katherine Johnson, and Peggy Whitson. The courage of these women encourages young women to aspire to leadership roles in their careers.
Teen girls are wise and powerful. Look no further than our Be the Star You Are!® amazing teen girls and our Express Yourself!™ Teen Radio hosts and reporters.

3-3-24 Overturning Wrongful Convictions
“True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.
Julia hosts a fascinating and insightful hour about the wrongful convictions of young people. She begins by citing the incarceration of Kenneth Hovland, who faced four decades of wrongful conviction. She also highlights DNA testing. The emergence of DNA technology has not only enabled us to identify perpetrators with unprecedented accuracy but has also served as a beacon of hope for those who have been wrongfully convicted. Organizations like the Innocence Project have tirelessly championed the use of DNA testing to exonerate innocent individuals, offering them a second chance at freedom and redemption. Since 1989, a staggering 575 people in the United States alone have been exonerated based on DNA testing. These are individuals who were once deemed guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt, yet whose innocence was revealed through the power of science and perseverance.
Julia then interviews teen Bijan Taheri, founder and director of Youth for Innocence, an organization dedicated to overturning wrongful convictions. Through volunteering, Youth for Innocence gives students first-hand experience with criminal law, aid lawyers in investigating the thousands of letters they receive from prisoners claiming innocence while taking the first step for prisoners to achieve their exoneration. They provide an initial training program to teach student volunteers to evaluate cases, examine new evidence, and assist pro bono attorneys with RT notes and summaries of cases. Volunteers then apply this knowledge to real-life cases, gaining first-hand experience with legal work and the administration of justice, and earning community service hours. Bijan personally conducted RT notes for defense attorney Ellen Eggers, as seen on Netflix’s Innocence Files Episode 5, on cases to reinvestigate and exonerate innocent prisoners.
The conversation is riveting and the topic is of critical importance. Tune in!
Bio: Bijan Taheri is a high school senior at the Davidson Academy in Reno, NV. He is the founder and director of Youth for Innocence, an organization dedicated to overturning wrongful convictions. Originally becoming involved in exoneration work through his homeschool counselor, he has worked on many wrongful conviction cases, including the recent California exoneree Miguel Solorio with public defender Ellen Eggers, who was featured on Episode 5 of The Innocence Files. His ultimate goal is to expand the organization to worldwide scale and impact, drawing on cases and recruits across all parts of the globe. In his free time, he enjoys furthering his economics research at the University of Nevada Reno, playing the viola in various orchestras, and puzzle-hunting with friends. 2-18-24 Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom
"Artificial intelligence is the brush that paints the canvas of possibility, blending innovation with imagination to craft a future limited only by our dreams." - Chat GPT
Education is critical to success. Host Julia and reporter of “A.I. and Us,” Kevin, talk about how A.I. can and does affect our lives and can be used in the classroom. Almost two centuries ago, what was taught was math, science, reading, writing, history, and foreign languages, and that hasn’t changed at all, not even what aspects of it were taught. At most, some topics were removed and some added, a few new textbooks here and there, but nothing meaningful. Artificial intelligence can integrate into the current curriculum, and have the curriculum adapt to it, and by extension, the rest of modern society. Technology has no limits, but humans do. Julia shares her experience and that of other students and teachers using A.I. She also asked ChatGPT to write an opening as the host of a radio show. It responded “Welcome, listeners, to today's special broadcast focusing on the use of ChatGPT in schools. I'm your host, Chat GPT, and I'm thrilled to guide you through this exploration of how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing education.” She exhibits how ChatGPT writes glorious poetry and very funny jokes. Julia was able to show the strengths and weaknesses of Chat GPT, including how the response was boring and non-engaging. The bottom line is that A.I. CAN be useful in the classroom. It’s what you DO with it, that makes a difference.

2-11-24 Is Outer Space our Next Home?
“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.“ – Arthur C. Clark
This episode of Express Yourself! could be right out of a sci-fi novel! Could outer space become our next home? Keerthi hosts and presents a segment suggesting the idea of venturing beyond our planetary borders. She believes it is more than just finding a new place to hang our space helmets; it's about expanding our horizons, both literally and metaphorically. It's about pushing the boundaries of what we thought possible and daring to dream of worlds beyond our wildest imagination. She wants to ignite the flames of curiosity, to inspire you to gaze up at the night sky with wonder and awe, to dream of worlds beyond our own and to dare to reach for them. In her segment, Space Spotlight, Saanvi starts with Mars as our first adventure. The journey ahead is about building physical infrastructure, but also about gathering the resilience, adaptability, and community spirit needed to live in such a different environment. Mars is like the Goldilocks of our solar system – not too hot, not too cold, and with a day almost as long as ours. It's got water ice, which is crucial for life, and it's the most accessible place for us to land, live, and learn about living on another planet. Plus, its surface has varied geography, from mountains taller than Everest to canyons longer than the U.S. is wide. It's the best shot we have at a second home in the solar system.
So let us embrace the uncertainty of the cosmos, let us revel in the beauty of the unknown, and let us boldly declare that yes, outer space is indeed our next home. For in doing so, we embrace the boundless potential of the human spirit, and we affirm our place in the grand tapestry of the universe.

2-4-24 Body Autonomy: The Effects of the Dobbs Decision and the Repeal of Roe vs. Wade
“There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise.” - W.E.B Dubois
In this episode of Express Yourself!™ Teen Radio, teen host, Hannah Sahota, passionately discusses the Dobbs Decision's repeal of Roe v. Wade and its profound implications for women's bodily autonomy. Providing a historical backdrop, she underscores the significance of landmark cases that paved the way for reproductive rights
The Roe v. Wade decision, a watershed moment in 1973, recognized the right to choose abortion as protected under the 14th Amendment's right to privacy. Hannah emphasizes the positive outcomes, including reduced maternal mortality and safer abortion practices.
Transitioning to the Dobbs Decision of 2022, she vehemently criticizes the conservative justices involved and condemns the resulting abortion restrictions in various states. Hannah raises concerns about the negative consequences, such as a potential surge in rape-related pregnancies and the exacerbation of health inequalities.
The host strongly challenges the pro-life stance, accusing conservative justices of prioritizing outdated ideals over women's rights. She advocates for comprehensive research on women's health and questions the empathy and understanding behind the pro-life position. Introducing "The Hotseat" to her segment, Hannah meticulously scrutinizes the backgrounds of Supreme Court Justices involved in the Dobbs Decision, exposing allegations, controversies, and potential conflicts of interest. The podcast also delves into the FBI's investigation into the People of Praise (PoP), revealing disturbing claims of abuse cover-ups within the Christian sect connected to Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
Expressing frustration with the Dobbs Decision, Hannah calls for a reevaluation of the Supreme Court and urges the appointment of empathetic and transparent individuals to ensure a fair and unbiased justice system. This episode as voiced by a young woman serves as an earnest call to action for protecting women's autonomy, safety, and access to reproductive healthcare.

1-14-24 Peer Pressure
Hosts Hannah and Julia with reporter, Kirpa, weigh in on peer pressure, which is defined as “a feeling that one must do the same things as other people of one’s age and social group in order to be liked or respected by them.” When peer pressure is encouraging you to engage in a dangerous or illegal proceeding, learn to say “no”. “No” is a complete sentence and it takes practice to stand up to negative influences. Find friends who have the same ethics and values and who motivate you to be a better person. That is positive peer pressure. It is human nature to want to be liked, accepted, and approved. Surround yourself with people whose behavior and moral code match your own. Be a leader, not a follower.

1-3-24 Goals and Resolutions for Success Plus Relationship Tips & More
Host Hannah offers easy, smart tips to setting goals and resolutions and accomplishing them. The first step to developing a habit is setting specific guidelines for a goal you want to achieve. Don’t be vague in setting your goals, and don’t lie to yourself about how much you can achieve at the start - change comes in waves, not all at once. You shouldn’t shame yourself for not being able to achieve all your goals at the SAME time, because you’ll just end up overwhelmed and unmotivated, which is the opposite effect we want. In addition to maintaining clear goals with detailed, cue-based plans, flexibility is one of the most crucial aspects regarding goals and resolutions for success. Fostering flexibility allows someone to set aside time in their schedule for their desired activities so that their resolutions can actually get DONE.
Tips to achieve your goals:
with some ideas:

Ecology, Healing with Nature, and Environmental Racism
Sidney Suh and Diya Hituvalli host an informative program about ecology, healing with nature and environmental racism. In Innovation Nation, Arjin Claire talks about how healing with nature is the idea that the human body has an inherent ability to heal itself over time without using what we view today as true medicines or remedies. Ecology is a branch of biology that specifically deals with the relationships of organisms between one another and their physical surroundings. In Healing with Nature, Rochelle Calvert invites us to imagine nature as a container and support for healing. When we are with nature it allows us to feel more at ease, to feel relaxed, to feel a sense of safety, well-being, and connection. These experiences are antidotes to the support of healing trauma. Build your relationship ecosystem to be sustained and thrive. This may mean establishing boundaries by creating physical, emotional, or mental space around ourselves. Nature’s impulse is to thrive, to adapt to be resilient and heal. We are made of nature. Sidney tackles environmental racism in segment three as she explains the 1930s practice known as redlining. The federal government would create color-coded maps with red lines drawn around neighborhoods that were deemed to be risky for real estate investment. Predominantly black and immigrant communities were redlined, no matter the income level of the neighborhoods. Learn more about environmental racism by educating yourself to better understand its roots and how it impacts minority communities today. Stay informed about local environmental issues and hold your government representatives accountable. Heal Mother Earth!

Rochelle lives in San Diego, California, and enjoys spending her free time in nature, hiking, practicing yoga, exploring the land’s Indigenous heritage, and resting with trees. www.newmindfullife.com

12-6-20 Writing, Journaling, and Humanities+
Writing and journaling increases motivation and reduces stress. Host Andrea Smith and reporter Jack Pawlakos discuss the benefits of getting thoughts on the page. Andrea then interviews brother/sister founders of Humanities+, Ryan and Sidney Suh who have created an online journal that releases seasonal issues on a quarterly basis. The + symbol represents the foundational goal, which is to foster constructive discussions that transcend the traditional divides between the Humanities and STEM fields. Humanities+ serves as a destination for readers seeking integrity, quality, and global perspectives. The chapter, The Gift of Writing penned by author by Daniel M. Wong from Cynthia’ Brian’s book, Be the Star You Are! Millennials to Boomers Celebrating Gifts of Positive Voices in a Changing Digital World ignites the reasoning that writing is an escape that heals the spirit and provides solace in the most unexpected ways.

11-8-20 Individuality with Fred Misurella
“Be yourself, your only self, your greatest self! You already are a star!” Cynthia Brian
Research shows that people do not become high performers by imitating others but by being themselves. Host Andrea Smith interviews author Fred Misurella for his fourth book, A Pontiac in the Woods, about a teen girl who lives alone and discovers her plans for her future. In Trends without Ends, Jack Pawlakos focuses on individuality and what trends are in relationship to expressing who we are individuals and how digitization has changed the world. The Gift of Individuality from the book, Be the Star You Are! for Teens by Cynthia Brian is read by Andrea. High performance occurs when a person goes beyond their own expectations in ways that are unique to them, consistently and repeatedly. In other words, state your plan, then exceed it in every way. Proclaim your vision and your mission. You don’t have to live in the woods to express your individuality, but you do need to claim your unique talents and skills. Celebrate your individuality.
Bio: Fred Misurella
A Pontiac in the Woods is the fourth in Fred Misurella’s cycle of novels about the modern American family. Others are Only Sons, Arrangement in Black and White, and A Summer of Good-Byes. He has also written Lies to Live By: Stories, and Short Time, a novella about Vietnam. His literary journalism has appeared in The Christian Science Monitor, The New York Times Book Review, and other journals. His essays on Primo Levi appear in The Legacy of Primo Levi and Answering Auschwitz. He is the current book review editor for VIA (Voices in Italian Americana). 10-25-20 Halloween-Salem's Witch, Tituba
Halloween is going to be very different during Covid-19. Host Arjin Claire talks with teen reporters Maggie Campione and Nihal Gill to find out what plans they have to celebrate in a safe, yet fun environment. They discuss costumes, candy, alternative ways to trick or treat, and offer historical background to the Halloween holidays. Author of Tituba, The Intentional Witch of Salem, Dave Tamanini, provides the backstory of the tragic 1692 Salem Witch Trials while adding a bit of magic and intrigue to his historical fantasy novel. Tituba, winner of the 2020 Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society Fiction book award is about power, race, and morality. The villagers see witches and demons everywhere. Their ministers say the Devil has sent them to steal souls. With Dave’s guidance, we revisit Salem’s witch hunts in a provocative new retelling, just in time for a devilish, scary Halloween.
Bio: Dave Tamanini
Dave Tamanini lives in Pennsylvania. His life experiences, combined with a desire to entertain, shape his writing. As a former civil rights investigator, and an attorney for 30 years, he learned a lot about human strength, frailty… and hypocrisy.
Social issues and the ways we deal with them fascinate Dave. In Tituba he weaves a historical/fantasy novel with real-life characters to focus on our common human nature, the abuse of power, and injustice. The real-life Tituba was a tragic figure. An enslaved African, Tituba and her owner, Rev. Parris, are the key voices. But others play a role, too, including the children of Salem village. Overall, Tituba is a provocative retelling of motivations during the 1692 witch hunt madness with an added touch of magic. www.DaveTamaniniAuthor.com

Even though it may be tempting to be a couch potato, it is very important to set up some sort of exercise regimen and always persevere and push yourself to feel great and healthy. Andrea interviews Judith Peck, an accomplished artist, sculptor, professor, and author of several books. They discuss two of her books, Sculpture as Experience, an excellent guide to creating sculpture and her new novel, Naked Under the Lights: A fascinating look at the world as artists perceive it—including the painful self-doubt and driving need to express the inexpressible. 10-11-2020: Public Speaking, Politics, Elections
The political atmosphere couldn’t be more polarized or polluted. The first Presidential debate was painful to watch with Trump being a bully, ignoring the moderator’s instructions, and never answering any of the questions. Hosts Andrea Smith and Siri Phaneendra delve into the world of public speaking as they interview author of Mastering the Art of Public Speaking, Michael J. Gelb. Mastering the Art of Public Speaking is a simple, powerful, practical approach to improving one’s public speaking in sales, leadership, and life. Michael said that the principles that help people be influenced by your words can be used for evil or good. Speaking can be manipulative. There is a saying in Hollywood and Washington, D.C.: “Sincerity is the key to success. And once you can fake that you have it made.” The candidates could use Michael’s help in clarifying and shaping a positive message that citizens want to hear. Jack Pawlakos discusses the trends Generation Z is experiencing in the political world of 2020. As a generation, Gen Z are the most digitally connected, with about 60% getting their news through social media. Gen Z plus Millennial voters will make up 37% of eligible voters in 2020. Andrea talks about the documentary The Social Dilemma which explores the human impact of social networking. She immediately deleted all of her social media accounts. Fake news travels faster than the truth, and the tools of social media could hack elections.
